The Palma Story - BS Brew Works - Jessica and Keith Valley were eager and excited about their move to an up-and-coming area of Central Florida. They had heard so much about its vibrant community and potential. As they settled into their new home, they eagerly explored the area, looking for a cozy local restaurant where they could enjoy a nice meal and meet their new neighbors.  To their surprise, they found that the neighborhood lacked the kind of intimate, welcoming dining spot they were hoping for. Chain restaurants dominated the scene, but none offered the personal touch and community feel they craved. Rather than feeling discouraged, Jessica and Keith saw an opportunity.

With a shared love for cooking and hospitality, they decided to create their own sanctuary.

They envisioned a place where people could gather, enjoy delicious food, and feel a sense of belonging. They found a charming store front with lots of character and began transforming it into “Palma Italian Kitchen.”

With roots back to Sicily, Jessica cracked open her old recipes from her beloved grandmother, Domenica. Mrs. Domenica quickly became the inspiration behind the idea of “Palma”. Born in Sicily, she brought with her the rich traditions of Sicilian cuisine and the art of making red wine to America where she settled in Pensacola, FL. Domenica’s home was always filled with the aroma of delicious food and the sound of laughter. She had a gift for bringing people together, whether it was through her famous Sunday dinners or the bottles of homemade red wine she generously shared with friends and family. Her kitchen was a place of warmth, love, and unforgettable flavors. Her home was also unforgettable ,with gold plastered all throughout it and green curtains outlining the Florida sunshine that flooded through the windows. These distinctive elements have woven into Palma’s welcoming atmosphere making it a place where no one wants to leave and is always wanting to come back.

Keith, a Fort Myers native and hospitality industry veteran, has infused a strong guest service emphasis to compliment Jessica’s delicious dishes. Keith has always believed that great food alone was not enough to create an unforgettable dining experience. It’s the little touches, personal interactions and the genuine care for the guest that has given Palma their edge. The welcoming environment can be felt as soon as one walks through the doors, between the intimate, cozy ambience to the smiling wait staff ready to get to know you. I recently relocated to Florida after spending over 20 years in the North part of this country and this is where I plan to stay and retire. I was born and raised in Brazil and moved here over 25 years ago.

State of Florida - Florida Foundation for Correctional Excellence (FFCE)

Established in 2020, the Florida Foundation for Correctional Excellence (FFCE) is a nonprofit direct support organization committed to advancing innovative and effective career readiness and reentry programs within the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC). Since its inception, Executive Director Erica Averion has led the organization with a focus on collaboration and innovation—bringing together public and private partners to strengthen workforce training programs and support successful reentry, all in service of public safety and thriving Florida communities.

Through its ongoing partnership with FDC, FFCE has helped expand and enhance program offerings that improve reentry planning and outcomes. These efforts include the purchase of new technology and equipment, the development of business and community partnerships, the launch of scholarship pilots, and the creation of employment opportunities for individuals returning to the community after incarceration.

Under the direction of the Department, FFCE is currently focused on building a direct employment pipeline by connecting business and industry leaders with individuals preparing for release. By bringing these partners into correctional facilities, the initiative promotes alignment with real workforce needs, increases employer engagement, and supports successful reentry through mock interviews, simulations, and direct job opportunities.

To further this work, FFCE is hosting Employment Partner Showcases—exclusive events designed to connect businesses with job-ready individuals and demonstrate how correctional education and training programs are preparing them to enter the workforce ready to contribute on day one of their return to Florida communities. These showcases offer a unique opportunity to tour facility-based training programs, speak with skilled individuals preparing for reentry, and learn how to customize hiring pipelines to meet evolving workforce demands. Participants will also have the chance to engage with other employers and learn about available hiring incentives.

Nestled along US Highway 27 in Haines City, Florida, Sisters Junktiques Vintage Market stands as a testament to the charm and character of small-town antiquing.  What began as a modest venture in 2015 by sisters Julie Stalnaker and Judy Brown, this 5,000 sq foot market has transformed into a bustling hub of creativity and nostalgia.

The building housing Sisters Junktiques was once the site of Blackwelder Groves, known for its fresh-squeezed orange and grapefruit juice, started by their dad, Richard Blackwelder in the 1970's into the early 90's, so Julie and Judy feel everything has come FULL CIRCLE.

The market houses more than 40 vendor booths, each offering a curated collection of items.  Shoppers can explore a variety of antiques, restored furniture, vintage jewelry, handcrafted goods, and seasonal decor.  The sisters' husbands also contribute to the family enterprise.  Julie's husband, Bill, operated Haines City Truck Brokers and Judy's husband, CJ, runs Brown's Saddle Shop, both located on the same property.

Sisters is more than just a shopping destination, it's a community hub.  The market hosts monthly "Sip and Shop" events where shoppers can enjoy refreshments while browsing with many vendors offering sales just for that night.  Special sales, such as Black Friday Weekend promotions, feature deeper sales drawing both regulars and newcomers to the market.

I moved to Winter Haven from Queens, NY in February 2023 to pursue multifamily commercial real estate acquisitions. February 2025 Member Spotlight  - Polk County Public Schools Inspire Awards presented by MIDFLORIDA Credit Union: honoring our local school's Teacher of the Year and Student Related Employee of the Year

Polk County, FL - Polk County Public Schools Inspire Awards - The Inspire Awards were held on Friday, November 8, 2024.  This annual awards program honors approximately 240 outstanding employees from across the district. Along with 12 finalists, the winners receive cash awards and other prizes from event sponsors. Judges include community members from local organizations and businesses, as well as past winners and finalists. Judges review the applications without knowledge of applicant names or schools. Judging criteria includes leadership and professional development activities, community and school involvement, and teaching style. Each year, the Florida Department of Education names a Florida Teacher of the Year, choosing an educator who has “demonstrated a superior capacity to inspire a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities.” The Florida School-Related Employee of the Year award recognizes outstanding education support personnel for contributions to their schools and communities. Both of Polk’s winners move on to compete for the state titles.

The Chamber will honor our Northeast Polk school's nominees for Teacher of the Year and School Related Employee of the Year at our Chamber's Annual Education Celebration luncheon, presented by AdventHealth Heart of Florida, that will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at the Lake Eva Event Center in Haines City.    Due to AdventHealth’s generous sponsorship, our school's Teacher of the Year nominees, School Related Employee nominees, and Principals of their respective schools are able to attend the luncheon complimentary.  Visit the Monthly Membership Luncheons page of the Chamber website to register for the luncheon and for more information.
